What Are the Causes of Back Acne?

Acne does not only appear on the face but also at the person's back. People who are suffering from back acne have coined the term "bacne" to refer to such skin breakout. This type of acne is similar to the one that appears on the face. They can be cysts, pimples, blackheads and pustules which can be irritating, itchy and painful at times especially when one is sweating. The upper back torso is prone to acne because of the abundance of the sebaceous glands on that area.

It can be quite uncomfortable feeling to have such skin disorder at the back but it is not as embarrassing as acne that grows on the face. After all, this can be easily hidden under the clothes. While it may be hidden from people's prying eyes, the discomfort that one gets should be enough reason to get one's back acne under control. The first step to knowing how to eradicate such skin infection is to know what causes it.

Increase in Hormones during Puberty

During the puberty period, the adrenal glands, testes and ovaries will release hormones called testosterone. Since this type of hormone is present in both male and female, back acne has affected both sexes. The testosterone will stimulate the sebaceous gland to produce more oil.

The oil together with the dead skin cell and bacteria will eventually block the skin pores and becomes infected resulting to skin breakout. "Hormonal bacne" is commonly treated by antibiotic which can be prescribed by a dermatologist. Sometimes, over the counter medications can also do the trick to stop the skin infection.

External Causes of Back Acne

Sometimes, the breakout can be caused by the gears that one wears regularly. People who wear backpacks, tight jerseys, helmets and other gears which will rub the skin most of the time are prone to suffer from back acne. The friction between the skin and the gear will produce heat that will eventually cause the skin to be irritated as it is likely to become infected by bacteria. Acne of this type is known as "acne mechanica". The people who are usually affected are athletes, students, motorcyclists, soldiers, and mountaineers.

Acne mechanica can be prevented by wearing cotton clothes for undershirt since cotton can help in absorbing sweat and perspiration. Personal hygiene should not be neglected. One should not forget to hit the shower especially after using the gym or after the game.

To some, back acne can be a real problem, especially with the scars it can produce after it is healed. When searching for the right medication, one should do some thorough research about the medicine's efficacy as well as its side effects. The best medicine is the one that will help rejuvenate damaged skin so as to help minimize the traces of acne. There are plenty of popular acne medications available out there that one can try. However, one must also remember that not all medicines can address all types of acne problems in all situations.
